Senior Dog Therapy
Senior Dog Physical Therapy Program
Our senior dog physical therapy program is designed for dogs over the age of 6 years. The exercises featured in the program mainly focus on strengthening, increasing range of motion, improving mobility and body awareness, and integrating movement patterns that will be helpful in navigation the later year of their lives, all while being mindful of compressive forces and impact.
We focus on moderate weight bearing, paying attention to alignment and staying in the mid range, so that we can best improve strength and stability without aggravating arthritic conditions in the limbs and spine. The mobility focused exercises featured in this program concentrate on real life demands your senior dog is likely to meet, while also avoiding unnecessary strain.
Our therapist will do some massage, provide education about lifestyle and exercise changes, and make dietary and supplement suggestions in each of our senior dog appointments. We can even add in canine hydrotherapy exercises in your home pool! Our goal is to help give you the knowledge to make your senior dog’s quality of life the best it can be for as long as possible!
Why is a senior dog physical therapy program important?
- Increases their quality of life
- Promotes healthy habits and creates a bodily condition that can prolong their lifespan
- Reduces the risk of heart issues
- Alleviates pain from joint conditions such as arthritis
- Keeps their weight in check (the thyroid, which is what regulates body weight, loses functionality as the body ages)
